BENEFITS AND REQUIREMENTS OF AMECA CERTIFICATION
AMECA was formed in 1994 to continue the Equipment Compliance Program previously conducted by the American Association of Motor Vehicles Administrators (AAMVA). AMECA provides safety equipment compliance services to governments, industry, and the general public across all U.S. states. It is a centralized program providing reliable information about compliant motor vehicle safety equipment.
To obtain AMECA certification for brake fluid, manufacturers must submit their products for testing to an AMECA-accredited laboratory. ABIC Testing Laboratories, Inc. is an AMECA-accredited laboratory. The testing includes a variety of physical tests, as well as a performance test under pressure and temperature conditions. The testing requirements are based on the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).
If the brake fluid passes all the required tests for FMVSS 116, AMECA will issue a certification mark that can be displayed on the product packaging or marketing materials. This mark indicates that the product has been independently tested and meets the requirements of this applicable standard.
AMECA certification is typically valid for a limited period of time. After that period, the brake fluid manufacturer must apply for recertification and submit their product for testing again to ensure that it continues to meet the requirements of the applicable standards.
If there are any changes to the product formula, manufacturing process, or packaging during the certification period, the manufacturer must inform AMECA and have the product retested to ensure that it continues to meet the requirements of the applicable standards to maintain AMECA’s certification.
The AMECA certification process provides an additional level of assurance to consumers and automotive manufacturers that the brake fluid they are using meets industry standards and has been independently tested for quality and performance. However, it’s worth noting that AMECA certification is not a legal requirement and does not replace compliance with federal and state regulations, such as FMVSS 116 and California’s brake fluid standards.
